A Sweet Passion for Cupertino

Sweet cakes and cupcakes delight Cupertino residents!

Well, that was yummy.

A friend recently told me I had to check out the cupcakes at Sweet Passions Bakery. She had gotten her kids a birthday cake from Sweet Passions, and raved about it. Never ones to turn down a cupcake challenge, my youngest and I went over to Sweet Passions, picked up half a dozen cupcakes (purely for research purposes), and our family sacrificed itself so that we could share this thought with you: yum.

We picked up five of the available cupcake flavors: vanilla, red velvet, chocolate, banana, and lemon raspberry. We’re banana bread lovers, and the banana cupcake was just like eating banana bread. One daughter loves red velvet. Two of us are chocoholics, and one loves all things vanilla. I have to say I was quite surprised when the winning votes came in – for the lemon raspberry. My kids don’t even like lemon. But this, wow. This was really, really good. As in, “Mom, let’s go get more of these” good.

Sweet Passions opened in San Jose in 1987, and when the owner retired, Cupertino resident Dilanthi Perera’s family persuaded her that the homemade and home-decorated cakes her family loved would be loved by her community, too.

The Cupertino location opened in 2010, and has been serving up made-to-order-cakes-for-every-occasion and delicious cupcakes ever since. Dilanthi’s son, Johann Vidanage, manages the location, and his energetic wife, Lydia, is full of great suggestions about custom cakes. As Lydia said, “We do one thing and we do it well.” Some of our local businesses are enjoying monthly birthday cakes delivered in a variety of great flavors. Have you tried one yet?

Sweet Passions is a bit hidden in Cupertino, near the old Mervyn’s store at Stevens Creek and De Anza. Apparently I’ve been driving by it for almost two years and haven’t noticed it. Take my advice: notice it. This is one sweet place to eat in our little town.
