In My Little Town - A Coffee Break for the Whole Family

A community enjoys coffee, tea and art in a place that feels like home.

This is the way I want to start my day in my little town:  with a hot mug of tea and a nice quiche. This is a place to sit, relax, read the paper, enjoy a bit of quiet or a chat with friends, as I look around at the wonderful art and listen to a friendly voice welcoming everybody by name.  This is why I go to the on Stevens Creek.

Jared Carlson and his wife Zohreh have owned the Roasted Coffee Bean since 1981, when it was located at Wolfe and Homestead and part of the Tandem buildings. Jared remembers opening day, November 13, 1981. It was pouring rain, and he made $70 that day. In later years, a small postal station in the restaurant brought in folks who loved being able to grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee, catch up with neighbors, and mail a letter in the same place. When Tandem sold the building in 1996, Jared found a light and open spot on Stevens Creek and has been serving my family and others since then.

On a recent visit, Jared was talking with longtime customer Jim, remembering how Jim’s wife and Jared’s wife brought in the wonderful art from Orchard Valley Ceramic Artist’s Guild. And I have to say, this art is one reason I do love Roasted Coffee Bean. There are ceramics, and jewelry, and scarves, and glass, and greeting cards. Over twenty local artists are represented. If I wanted to start a tea pot collection, or knew some one who had one, this would be the place I’d look first. I bet I could do a good chunk of my holiday shopping here and then sit down and relax with biscotti and tea. Or perhaps one of the samosas. Those are pretty darn good, too.

Jared and Zohreh roast and grind their coffee onsite. They are such ‘coffee people’ that Jared even teaches about coffee. Really. In fact, he’s got two Coffee Classes coming up, in February and in March, which you can register for via De Anza or Foothill Colleges.

The number of photos and plaques on the wall will tell you how supportive Jared and Zohreh are of the Cupertino community. There are thanks from Little League teams, soccer teams, West Valley Community Services, and the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce. Jared will tell you what a great place Cupertino is, “the center of the world!" and how wonderful the neighborhood is. The real clue that these folks are Cupertino folks, though, is that everybody smiles as they come in, so many folks are greeted by name, and people are happy here.

This is the way I want to end my day in my little town: sipping hot chocolate and laughing with my family. And that’s why you’ll find me at the Roasted Coffee Bean.
