In My Little Town...Photographs and Memories

Preserve memories and learn new skills with a friendly family-owned business in Cupertino.

A high school friend teasingly asked if anybody remembered who opened for the Eurythmics in the summer of ’84. Not only did I remember, but I knew exactly where the ticket stub was and emailed back minutes later. She was stunned.

I know I’m not the only one who has ticket stubs from high school concerts. Or wallet-sized photos from the Sadie’s dance. I’m sure I’m one of many who have inherited a grandmother’s scrapbook, a photo album of unnamed people, a partially completed family tree. Some of these are yellowing with age. Others are just plain falling apart. What to do with these treasures?

Owner Vivian Chien is wonderfully resourceful and creative. She’s put together a talented staff of teachers who share suggestions on organizing, making themed albums, and even card making. Memories Live On can create custom acrylic stamps, custom wedding invitations, and custom scrapbooks. You can even have a private consultation to get ideas when you’re just stuck.

Vivian taught literature at Lynbrook High School for six years before her daughter arrived prematurely. (She’s fine and precocious and too cute for words). As her maternity leave was coming to a close, Vivian and her accountant husband, Mort Hsiao, learned that the Westgate location of Memories Live On was for sale. They purchased the store in January, 2008, moved to the larger Cupertino location, and opened in February, 2008.

In addition to a variety of scrapbook, card making, and altered book supplies, Memories Live On offers over a dozen classes for adults and kids. An idea to keep your little ones busy over break: sign up for Teacher Lauren’s creative kids’ classes (Dec. 19, 20, 21, 29 and 30). You can rent the crop space and have a birthday party or a night out with friends. With so many new papercrafting products on the market, I appreciate the make and takes which actually demonstrate the new toys and help me figure out how I could actually use them.

I’ve found the card classes to be especially helpful since some new products have uses that just aren’t intuitive to me.

Memories Lives On supports Cupertino by participating in and donating to local school auctions and church groups. Unsold supplies from the annual Paper Crafter’s Flea Market are donated to RAFT, which supports local teachers. Crop for the Cure supports breast cancer research. Their 4 year anniversary celebration will support the March of Dimes.

Vivian and her Memories Live On staff have helped me feel creative, learn new skills, meet papercrafting and jewelry artists, and preserve and protect photographs and memories of my little town.
