C.B. Eaton Hosts Yearbook Cover Design Contest

Deadline for all student participants is Feb. 27, school is looking for entries that will feature one design on each front and back of school yearbook.

While students at C.B. Eaton Elementary School are enjoying the week off from school for Winter Break, school officials and parent volunteers are hoping that a handful of young Eagles will be utilizing their artistic skills to whip up a design that will go on the cover and back of this year’s yearbook.

According to Eaton principal Keri Van de Star, the school is looking for all students, kindergarten through fifth grade, to participate in its first-ever yearbook cover design contest.

As the school's Web site says, each student can submit one entry and two entries will be chosen for the front and back respectively and the design must include the school name and colors in it.

Artwork for the design should be made using crayons, paint, pastels, markers and colored pencils.

“All students are encouraged to participate,” said Van de Star. “Their entry should portray their ideas about Eaton.”

Van de Star also mentioned that the design must be in color and on 8.5-by-11-inch paper held vertically, and all entries must be submitted to the school office by Feb. 27.

Though the contest sounds like it could be a handful for school staff, Van de Star has received relief from Eaton parent-volunteer Kaylani Dange, who is heading the yearbook contest project.

Dange, who has a child in 5th grade at the school located on Suisun Drive, said that the contest is a great way for the students to show off their creative side as well as communicate their school pride through art.

“We thought if the students do it, they will have a sense of involvement,” Dange said. “We are looking for ideas where kids could express their feeling about their school and express their school pride.”

Dange said that so far, the school has yet to receive any entries from students but believes that some youngsters will use the week break from school to craft a design. She said that she has not asked for teachers to have their students work on the project during school hours but mentioned that the idea was up to each individual educator.

“We hope to get a good response after Winter break,” she said.
