Career Day at Cupertino's Regnart Elementary Ends With a Power Clap

Cupertino Patch editor speaks to a bunch of 5th-graders about her job.

Among the career day presenters on March 15 at Regnart Elementary School were an inventor, a racing car team owner, a former San Jose Shark, and me.

Career day at Regnart is a long-standing tradition they call Discovery Day. They invite professionals from a wide variety of fields to talk to the students about their jobs. The Air National Guard, Roderick Bersamina, got an awestruck "ooooh" when he stood up to collect his appreciation certificate, he figures it was for the uniform.

Included among the other speakers were a park ranger, sheriff, dentist, artist, chef and guide dog trainer with an adorable Labrador puppy that deservedly got the most attention.

I spoke to four classes of mostly 5th-graders—there was one class that was a mix of 4th- and 5th-graders—who had a fairly good grasp of what news is and what a reporter does.

I explained to them that the following Monday I would be hosting Monta Vista High School students for job shadow day (more on this in a separate article) and we would be interviewing Cupertino Mayor Orrin Mahoney as part of that project. I asked the Regnart students what questions they would ask the mayor if they were to interview him. Here are a few of their questions:

“Ask him why he wanted to be mayor.”

“What will he do to make Cupertino better?”

“Ask him for his autograph.”

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
