Cupertino Sparkles With STAR Results

California's standardized testing results are in, and Cupertino schools shine.

The 2011 STAR results are in, and it will come as no surprise to Cupertino that the city’s students and schools scored well.

STAR—California Standardized Testing and Reporting—reported that a total of 4.7 million students took the test this year, a record year in regards to the national average of math and language results obtained by all students throughout the state. 

Out of all 29 schools present within Cupertino, that is 25 from the Cupertino Union School District and four from the Fremont Union High School District, a total average of almost 90 percent of students obtained advanced or proficient scores.

Murdock-Portal Elementary had the largest percentage of advanced scores at 86 percent; the top middle school was Joaquin Miller Middle with 77 percent; and Lynbrook High got the highest percentage of advanced scores out of any other high school in Cupertino with 63 percent.

STAR tests have five grading categories, with advanced and proficient at the top, basic at the middle, and below and far below basic at the bottom.  The state wants every student to score within the proficient and advanced range.

The STAR tests are a used as a measurement of academic ability and success for students throughout California. They are also a way for schools to see the some of the academic areas that need to be worked on.
