UPDATE: CUSD Public Hearing Tuesday Night

Cupertino Union School District will hold a public hearing on a impact fees at 6 p.m. March 13.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article erroneously stated that the public hearing Tuesday, March 13, was for a possible bond measure. It is a meeting about impact fees.

The bond measure has been decided and will be on the June ballot. We apologize for the confusion.

A March 6 unanimous vote by the district’s board of trustees put into motion a possible bond measure for the June ballot. Tuesday’s meeting at the district’s administrative offices is the public’s opportunity to speak out on the measure which, if passed, could cost property owners in the district up to $30 per $100,000 assessed valuation as determined by the Santa Clara County Assessor's Office.

The money from the bond—an estimated $220 million—would be spent on facility repairs and new facilities needed to keep up with growing enrollment, the district says.

Three middle schools—Hyde, Lawson and Cupertino—are expected to reach capacity soon and the district hopes to avoid the use of portables in accommodating the rise of enrollment.

Additionally, the bond money used would be used to improve earthquake and fire safety systems and beef up the computer and educational technology in the science labs.

Two parcel tax measures—Measure C that passed in May 2011 and Measure B passed in 2009—are intended to help fund core academic, art and music programs, retain teachers, keep libraries open, keep schools clean, safe and with updated technology.  Both measures allowed for exemptions such as senior citizen, contiguous parcels, and Social Security Income for a disability—the proposed June 2012 bond measure has no such allowable exemptions.
