A State champion in a speech event and a Berkley graduated instructor is teaching Pre-Public Speaking and Writing course for Elementary School students at our center in Los Gatos. .

The objective of this class is to introduce and begin to hone students' ability in the important leadership skill of public speaking as well as improve writing skills. Students will employ different tools in their speech presentations. Some exercises will be to practice giving prepared speeches or reading short stories; everyone gives the same speech. Other sessions will revolve around a short writing exercise and present the writing product orally to the group. The students will enjoy putting down on paper their issues and positions appropriate to their age, and then use the various tools of public speaking like voice quality, tone, volume, articulation, pronunciation, eye contact, and body gestures to make an effective presentation. They will learn how to use different methods to move through their speech. The main skills we expect to use are memorization, full speech manuscripts, and outline. As our students practice these skills in their speeches, they will overcome nervousness when they speak, demonstrate confidence and feel more, or completely comfortable talking in front of audiences of any size.
This class is important preparation for our Speech/Debate program and forensics league.

The director of our Speech/Debate program, Don Heinsohn began his own career in debate in 1971. Since 1985, when he first began coaching debate, he has worked with numerous State and National Finalists and Champions in a variety of events. His team even won the California State Championship. Mr. Heinsohn holds the title of a Triple Diamond Coaching Award from the National Forensics League, and in 2007 he worked with the State Champion team in Public Forum Debate.
Mr. Heinsohn holds a degree in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and has a teaching credential from Humbolt State University. Currently he teaches history and coaches debate at James Logan High School in Union City. Thus, Mr. Heinsohn is also able to bring his extensive experience to Young Genius as a Debate Coach and instructor.
