This is our new, weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children and yes, even teens.  The idea is to offer you suggestions about things you can do as a family!

Each week, we'll give you the info on five of the best family activities or events in the area for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

 •   SATURDAY NIGHT STAR SHOW AT THE PLANETARIUM

Where/When  , 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd. () Saturday,  shows at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. 

Why Go: What's not to like about going to the planetarium? There are three different shows appropriate for different ages;: 5 p.m., Zula Patrol, preschool to kindergarten; 6 p.m., The Planets, third to fifth grade; 7 p.m., Cosmic Journey: A Solar System Adventure, third grade to adult.

Pricing: $7 per ticket 

•   ACROBATS OF CHINA

Where/When  , 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Because it will be absolutely amazing.    is a first-class acrobatic show by the acclaimed . It has won virtually all the top acrobatic awards available. See what this troupe can do for yourself!

Pricing: $30-$120 and, yes, we know it's a bit pricey, but for something and someone special, well, if you can, why not?

•   FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOK SALE 

Where/When  Friends of the Cupertino Library 10800 Torre Ave., Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, noon-3 p.m.

Why Go: To support your public library! The Friends raise money for library projects by reselling donated items such as books and CDs.

Pricing: Free, except for the items you buy! 

• MILPITAS HIGH GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL VS. CUPERTINO

 Where/When:  Milpitas High Gym, Wednesday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: Take the ride to Milpitas to show your support for the Cupertino High School girls varsity basketball team, being played at Milpitas. Cheer your team and show your own kids how much fun basketball can be. Who knows, you may have an up-and-coming basketball player in your court.

• HIDDEN VILLA MOVIE NIGHT 

Where/When: Where: , 26870 Moody Rd., Los Altos Hills, Friday 7-9:30 p.m.

Why Go: A “green” movie for Valentine’s Day—perfect for families. No Impact Man is the true story of one man’s decision to eliminate his impact on the environment for a full year and the impact it had on his family. Plus, if you get there early, you can have dessert, coffee, tea or cocoa. (Refreshments served from 7-7:30 p.m. The movie starts at 7:30 p.m.)
