Athletic prowess rules, too, at Monta Vista High School on its first ceremony recognizing the signing of the letters of intent binding them to their colleges and their sport next year.

A group of Monta Vista High School athletes, school administrators, and family members, gathered on Thursday to take photos that are surely bound for the family scrapbooks.

Monta Vista High School may be best known for its students' strong academic performance; however, Thursday's event shows they are producing some fine athletes, as well.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has estimated that the odds of a high school student competing in their chosen sport at the collegiate level are not great. For example, only 3% of all high school senior basketball players will go on to play NCAA sponsored basketball.

On May 30, 2013, in Principal April Scott's Conference Room, Monta Vista High School held what may well become a new annual ceremony to honor its athletes who will continue playing their sports as they move on to college.

For many of these athletes, a National Letter of Intent (NLI) was signed. The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution. The student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year and the institution agrees to provide financial aid.

Congratulations to all the athletes.

They include:
Kalani Seaver, Softball, Webster University
Mariel Akaogi, Soccer, California State University - Long Beach
