More National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Last week Patch presented the list of students in public schools, here is the list of students in private or homeschool.

The list of students who attend private schools and nearby-to-Cupertino schools with students who made the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Corporation semifinalist list are included here.

The list was released Sept. 12 and Patch provided the list of students who attend Cupertino, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista high schools in an article National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist List Released.

With about 16,000 semifinalists, the program expects about 15,000 of the students to advance to the finalist level, which will be announced in February.

More than half of the finalists will go on to compete for a Merit Scholar® title and portion of the National Merit Scholarship worth more than $32 million.

More than 22,000 high schools nationwide and about 1.5 million juniors entered the 2013 competition, which awards the honors based on “exceptional academic ability”, and “potential for success in rigorous college studies” the organization said in a statement.

If you have a child who attends a any school and lives in Cupertino and is not on this list, please send the pertinent information to Anne Ernst at anne.ernst@patch.com.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
