Ready, Set, Read!

The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation is throwing its second-ever Great Schools Summer Read-a-Thon, firing up K-8 students to read in exchange for sponsorships.

Now in its second year, the ’s (CEEF) Great Schools Summer Read-a-Thon is off and running, inspiring young readers to crack open a book or two during their summer vacations.

The event, open to K-8 students, asks readers to gather sponsorships for either the number of books read, the number of hours read or a full sponsorship for participation, according to Minh Ngo, executive director of CEEF.

All proceeds go to CUSD schools and can be spent by them however they like.

“We provide the schools with the flexibility to decide where to best direct the funds,” Ngo said.

Last summer, more than 200 students in grades K-8 participated from all 25 CUSD schools, logging over 1,000 hours of summer reading, she added. The figure raised was impressive, too.

"Last year, the event raised $5,000," Ngo said. "Our goal this year is to once again raise $5,000 to $7,500."

The Read-a-Thon, Ngo explained, came about thanks to CEEF's response to parents asking for more activities to engage Cupertino families.

Students interested in participating can sign up through CEEF’s website. Reading lists are provided by the organization based off of books available at area libraries.

All CUSD student participants with $10 in sponsorships will receive a free Pizza Party coupon and the chance to win a party at the establishment. One student per grade will also be entered to win other prizes.

Sponsorship payments can be made online or via mail. Donations must be turned in by August 31 to qualify students for raffle prizes.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
