BOYS TENNIS: Day One of CCS Individual Boys Tennis Championships Hits the Courts in Aptos

Section's finest singles and doubles players duke it out in first two rounds of championships on Tuesday morning.

Several of the top boys tennis singles and doubles players in the section ascended upon Imperial Courts in Aptos for the day one of the 2011 Individual Singles and Doubles Central Coast Section Championships on Tuesday morning.

In first round action, Kenneth Tao of Lynbrook High-Cupertino won his match against Shep Newcomb of Woodside, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

After round one play concluded, Tao fell to No. 1 singles seed Nikhil Jayashanka of Saratoga High, 6-1, 6-2.

“It felt great to be here in CCS in my first year,” Tao said.”To play well in the first round is awesome.”

In one of the juicier matches in first round play on the singles draw, Cupertino High’s Manpreet Tiwana defeated Leigh High’s Hanson Hermsmeier, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

“This was a pretty tough match because he (Hanson Mermsmeier) is a very good player,” Tiwana said. “He has a very good serve and I just tried to break it.”

Tiwana and Jayashanka will meet in the semi-finals on Thursday at Imperial Courts in Aptos.

“Today I had a lot of unforced errors on my part, but for the most part my year was a good year because I lost only once coming into this tournament,” Leigh  senior Hermsmeier said.

In other singles first round play, the No.2 seed advanced to the second round by defeating Nico Lunardi of Los Gatos 1-6, 6-3 and 6-2 and the No. 4 seed Trevor James of Bellarmine also moved on by topping Cody Rakela of Scotts Valley, 6-1; 6-2.

 “It was a good match,” Scotts Valley singles player Rakela said. “I had a lot of chances and had a lot of breaking points. He is one of those players that even when he’s down, he comes back with a big shot.”

In the Individual Doubles competition, the No. 1 doubles team of Andrew Carlisle and J.T Nishimura of Menlo School advanced to the second round in a straight set victory over Hong Sun and Kelvin Wang of Cupertino, 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles team of Carlisle and Nishimura took on the team of Eric Spence and Brendan Lum of Los Gatos in the second round and won, 6-4, 6-4.

In other double action, the team of Tommy Cheng and Razvan Dorin of Cupertino lost in the first round to the doubles team from Leland High of Lance Ngo and Andrew Abiog, 6-1, 6-2.

Semifinal play in the singles and doubles bracket will take place on Thursday and begin at 1 pm. The two finals will be played one half hour after each semifinal match has concluded.
