SOFTBALL: Homestead Bats Come Alive

Mustangs slug their way past Los Gatos in De Anza showdown.

Homestead 12, Los Gatos 4

After a quiet showing offensively in a non-league tilt against a strong Westmont High softball team on Saturday, the Homestead High softball got back to the more important business at hand on Tuesday—wrapping up a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division championship.

In a meeting of the top two teams in league, Homestead knocked the ball all over the field to the tune of 17 hits and 12 runs during a 12-4 victory over second place Los Gatos High on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Los Gatos.

The win improved the Mustangs record to 9-0 in league play, extending their lead to two games over Los Gatos (17-6-1, 8-2 De Anza) with three games remaining in the regular season.

Homestead (18-3, 9-0 De Anza) scored twice in the first and five more times in the second inning, stunning the host ‘Cats early on in the key league matchup.

It was safe to say that senior Colleen Aubrey was locked in at the plate in this one.

The team captain went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in the win, banging out three singles, two doubles and knocking in three runners for the Mustangs.

Another Homestead hitter responsible for a lot of chaos was freshman Chelsey Convissar. The underclassman had three hits in five at-bats and had one RBI in the De Anza affair.

Homestead scored in six of seven innings.

Los Gatos was held off the board in the first four innings of play before pushing two runs across in the fifth. They added two more scores the rest of the way.

Sydney Werner went 2-for-3 with a double for the ‘Cats. Junior Crystal McGee also went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Homestead starting pitcher Hannah Strotman pitched a complete game to earn the win. Both teams will be back in action on Thursday.
