SOFTBALL: Monta Vista Tops Milpitas

Matadors rally late to nip Trojans.

The Score: Monta Vista 6, Milpitas 5

The Star: Monta Vista Pitcher Alanna Onishi kept matters under control Wednesday afternoon against Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino division foe Milpitas High despite trailing the majority of the way until the seventh inning. Onishi pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on four hits during the dramatic 6-5 comeback win for Monta Vista over Milpitas Wednesday afternoon in Milpitas.

Milpitas slugger Kiana Aguilar batted a perfect 3-for-3 with two singles, one double, and one run scored against the visiting Matadors. Milpitas junior Sydnie Turner also contributed with her own two-run blast going 1-for-4 at the plate.

Turning Point: Milpitas starting pitcher Marie Mosqueda struck out the side, opening the game with a purpose for the host Trojans. The Trojans took charge early after one inning of play, scoring three runs against the Matadors, highlighted by a two-run blast to deep left field by Turner.

Monta Vista responded quickly with its own three-run surge in the very next frame. A solo blast by Carla Mack and a game tying two-out RBI single to center field by Kylie Page evened things up early.

Milpitas took a 4-3 lead into the final inning with the hope of keeping pace in the El Camino standings. However, a walk followed by three straight fielding errors igniting a three-run rally by the visitors.

Tiana Teixera blasted a deep solo blast to left field to cut the lead to one, but the rally was short lived as the Trojans grounded out during their last two at-bats giving the Matadors the crucial league win.

The Quotes: “We struggled most of the game swinging so we decided to play the short game and put the ball in play--- hoping they (Milpitas) would make mistakes and fortunately it worked out,” said Monta Vista head coach Raymond Teixiera on today’s come from behind win against Milpitas.

Monta Vista starting pitcher Onishi was pleased to earn a tough road win.

“You just have to be able to not let the other team get to you while under pressure,” said Monta Vista’s Onishi on her calm demeanor on the mound against Milpitas.

Milpitas will look to bounce back and string together a couple wins as the season winds down in the next two weeks.

“We’re looking pretty good—just a few errors that we need to work on in practice,” said Milpitas’ Aguilar after the league loss.

What’s Next? Milpitas (8-10, 4-3 ECL) plays next on Friday  on the road  against Saratoga High. First place Monta Vista (15-2, 7-1 ECL)  also plays on Friday as they host Los Altos.

Bottom Line: Despite Monta Vista’s hitting woes today against Milpitas, they still found ways to score when push came to shove with their relentless it’s not over till it’s over mentality. The Matadors have taken the El Camino by storm. Once thought to be a two horse race between Milpitas and Gunn, Monta Vista has now won seven of eight in league play with only four league games to go.
