A Jewelry Auction Aids a Good Cause

The sparkle of diamonds will dazzle and help a bunch of do-gooders do more good.

It’s not often that a gal can say that buying jewels supports a good cause, but that rationale works when purchasing any of four beauties donated by one local woman for an auction that’s part of an annual fundraising event.

Donated from the personal collection of Hung Wei, a longtime member of Cupertino Rotary, the jewelry is a perfect accompaniment to the annual fancy-schmancy event, called , which raises money for multiple international causes.

The jewelry, which is up for auction and can be seen online here, includes the following:

  • Multi-color sapphire and diamond “leaf” pendant made of 14 karat white gold with 1 carat sapphire and .02 carat diamond;
  • Black and white diamond earring set made of 14 karat yellow gold with .20 carat (38 stones) black enhanced diamonds and .33 carat (58 stones, G-H Color, SI-I Clarity) white diamond;
  • Tanzanite and diamond ring with 14 karat white gold with .63ct tanzanite and .25 carat (28 stones, H-I Color, VS-SI Clarity) diamond;
  • Black onyx and diamond dangling earrings with 14 karat white gold with .50 carat diamond.

Starting bids for each is $650 and increase in $50 increments.

Global Elegance is held at a mansion every year—the Atherton home of Dr. Ta-lin and Joyce Hsu is the other eye candy this year—and raises money for a variety of charitable causes supported by Cupertino Rotary. The money raised through Global Elegance gets matching grants from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International to support such causes as Sankara Eye Foundation, which seeks to prevent and cure blindness, and others.

Bids can be sent directly to Wei at hungweichien@gmail.com, but hurry the auction closes Aug. 17.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
