Donations for The Grateful Garment Accepted at Bitter+Sweet

An organization that serves sexual assault victims needs items such as shampoo, socks and underwear. A donation box is available at Bitter+Sweet now.

Next time you stop in at Bitter+Sweet for a treat and a latte take along a brand new pair of underwear. Underwear? Sound odd? Not as long as there is a donation box for The Grateful Garment in the shop.

The Grateful Garment is a nonprofit group that provides the basics for sexual assault victims who may be left with nothing but a paper examination gown after an exam at the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) facility at Valley Medical Center. The SART exam requires victims to give up their clothing for forensic evidence, which means some victims are left with nothing to wear home.

The Grateful Garment provides items such as clothing, toothpaste, shampoo and more for victims, and now thanks to an arrangement set up by Robin Hurwitz and Bitter+Sweet owner Janice Chua donors can drop off needed items at Bitter+Sweet for the next week.

The items on The Grateful Garment’s wish list include:

  • Toothpaste
  • Tooth brushes
  • Dental floss
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Mouthwash
  • Soap
  • Cotton swabs
  • Body wash
  • Make-up remover cloths
  • Combs
  • Brushes
  • Body/Hand lotion
  • Lip balm
  • Feminine pads
  • Shower caps
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Protein bars
  • Tea bags
  • Underwear (new, male and female child through adult)
  • T-shirts (all sizes)
  • sweatshirts (all sizes)
  • socks (all sizes)

*Per health code requirements, please donate only new items.

While you’re there splurge a little and sit down for a cup of Humphrey Slocombe ice cream, say Sweet Summer Corn or Tahitian Vanilla, or maybe the crowd favorite Secret Breakfast.

It's difficult to know what's going on in a kid's mind unless they feel confident enough to open upRead More and talk. And this program helps us adults to learn to listen differently.

I too was at this Challenge Day. It was my 6th. I first volunteered because I watched the programRead More on MTV "If You Really Knew Me" when my son was being severely bullied in middle school and saw the program was offered when he was a freshman in high school. My company strongly supports me volunteering for this and allows me to take the day off work to attend. I am continually humbled by what these teens share and saddened at what some of them have experienced in their short lives. This program is so valuable. I think every school should offer it and every parent should attend. It helps us to realize that we need to think twice before we judge or assume things about others when we know nothing about them. It is the volunteering opportunity that I look forward to participating in every year.
