I generally refer to it as the "employee or server menu"--but it definitely is aRead More "secret"l

My son works at Starbucks and says there is no secret menu.

Probably the only fresh ingredient. Show some gratitude, or risk an attitude.

@Anne, my sense of adventure (and drinking) is doing fine. I was fishing for steelhead in OregonRead More with friends for St Patricks Day, and made "Irish Car Bombs" for us. They are an Irish version of a boilermaker made with pint of Guinness, a shot (on the side in a shot glass) of Black Bushmills whiskey topped with a splash of Bailey's Irish Cream. First one is tasty, fourth is even better. But, that was St Patrick's Day and not a real religious holiday.

Really? We are celebrating Easter by creating new drinks? What happened to the old standbys likeRead More the "Roll Away the Stone" boilermaker, or the "Bloody Cross" Bloody Mary or the straight "Confessional" tequila shot? Do we really need more? I know when I think of Easter the first thing that comes to mind is what am I going to drink. But really?? Is there now specialty drinks for quinceaneras or baptisms?

@Michelle, This site isn't Los Altos Patch, but since I edit both, I will make the observation thatRead More Los Altos has a surfeit of "nice" grocery stores: Draegers, Whole Foods Los Altos and Andronico's, to name the "premium" stores. Definitely "nice," (though Draeger's could probably use a facelift). In the next tier, there is Safeway (now closed for major renovations) and Lucky, which, I will agree with @Susan, is more than fine. And, in fact, Lucky is one of the few Kosher-for-Passover purveyors in the area, which is a great service.

What on earth are you talking about? I've been going to that store for years. It does not smellRead More and the staff treats me just fine. Count your blessings: "Terrible" is not having one single traditional grocery store in the entire city of Cupertino!

My comment probably doesn't address your question exactly, but I would like to see Macy's move outRead More of Valley Fair and one of its rivals move in. In my opinion, Macys was responsible for the original decline of Vallco. When Emporium was there, this was a thriving shopping center. Once they moved out, there were several interested stores, but Macys bought the store and left it empty for months. After urging from the city council, they put in an outlet store, the goal being, no doubt, to keep competitors out and to send foot traffic to their store in Valley Fair. After more complaints, Macys spent months renovating the place and then opened up an inferior store where it is practically impossible to find staff to take your money, let alone help you. After a period of 2-3 years, the foot traffic had declined and smaller stores had had to close. There was no higher-end store to anchor the mall. Sears and Penneys are great, but you can get to either of those without having to enter the mall. Hard to see how the damage Macys did can ever be repaired except possibly by a fresh anchor stores which would encourage other retailers to move in.

My only regrets are I thought of this just as I left the meeting shortly after the Main StreetRead More developer discussion closed at the City Council meeting. OF WHICH Apple showed up to complain that the developer was replacing an "anchor store" with office space, hence allocating some office space away from the city plan that Apple apparently feels they are entitled to own all that space. This would have been the perfect "win-win-win" solution had it only gotten on the table earlier - wins for the city, the developer and of course always a win for Apple! ;-) PLUS such a store for Apple so close to headquarters could not only be a showcase store, but double as a world-wide retail training by example store and I'm sure could multiplex a few more gains from it too!

Dale, that's a brilliant idea! A classy, upscale Apple store in what is expected to be an upscaleRead More Main Street would be a great fit and quite what people from around the world would expect to see in the city where Apple is headquartered. Hey Apple, are you listening?!
