News of a VW Jetta involved in missing teen's case draws out witnesses.
News about a red Volkswagen Jetta being associated with the disappearance of Morgan Hill teen Sierra Lamar is prompting witnesses to come forward, according to Marlene LaMar. “It’s just that, with the release of the vehicle that’s out and talking to the media, more people are coming forward,” LaMar said. “I can’t disclose specifically, but law enforcement is interviewing witnesses that are coming forward because of all of that. More people are coming forward, so that’s been a positive thing." Although detectives working on the LaMar case won’t release many details regarding the Volkswagen’s association, LaMar said authorities are currently looking into whether the VW is the right vehicle, and whether surveillance footage depicts the …

Wednesday marks the 2 month anniversary of Sierra LaMar's disappearance; searches continue
Friends and family of missing Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar mark the two-month anniversary of her disappearance Wednesday with another search. Sierra, 15, disappeared after she left for school on the morning of March 16, prompting extensive searches of the area. Sheriff's investigators have said they believe her disappearance is an abduction. “This is not how I wanted to acknowledge this date,” Sierra’s father, Steve, said. “But I am grateful that the community continues to support her cause.” Despite Sierra’s multi-month absence, support remains strong for the Sobrato High Student, with more searches underway Wednesday and Saturday. “The KlaasKids Foundation is continuing to assist law enforcement and the LaMar family with future …
Dump coal production from its energy consumption line-up, says Greenpeace to Apple.
Editor's note: This article is an update on Tuesday's Greenpeace Protests Apple article and contains new information obtained from a Bay City News Service report. Greenpeace activists who landed at One Infinite Loop early Tuesday morning to protest Apple’s use of “unclean” energy at its North Carolina data center demanded Apple be more innovative in its energy production choices, while reportedly using Apple devices themselves. Two activists—who barricaded themselves in a giant pod they were calling a “survival device” with a likeness of Apple’s logo painted on it—were arrested. The 8-foot by 10-foot structure has been used in separate protests such as to prevent arctic drilling. Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies responded to …

Working under the assumption Sierra LaMar is alive, investigators divulge little in order to protect her.
Aware of criticism by some who say police are making public enough detail in the Sierra LaMar case, police move forward saying they err on the side of caution—and the side of protecting the 15-year-old missing Morgan Hill girl. “A lot of people don’t understand it’s the way it goes—they’ve got to protect her,” said Davina Joy, who volunteers with the KlaasKids Foundation, the nonprofit organizing weekly searches for Sierra. The belief that Sierra is alive is based on a lack of evidence proving otherwise, and has provided hope for a positive outcome. “I heard Marlene and Steve LaMar say it’s pretty much breathing new life into people who have watched [the case] over the last couple of months,” Joy said. “We hope [investigators] are doing …
Divers will study items captured via sonar at Anderson and Almaden reservoirs.
UPDATE as of Thursday, May 17, at 12:50 p.m.: Sheriff's officers have been returning to reservoirs in South Santa Clara County to verify areas of interest detected via sonar. Sheriff’s divers verified questionable objects at Anderson Reservoir Wednesday, but didn’t find anything of value. “So far, on any of the water searches, all they’ve come across is debris: tires, appliances—you name it and they’re coming across it down there, but nothing related to the case so far,” said Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza. Divers are returning to either Anderson Reservoir today or will move onto verify other areas of interest at Guadalupe Reservoir, Cardoza said. Sheriff’s divers are returning to Anderson and Almaden reservoirs to verify objects …

To help warn homeowners against scams, law enforcement agencies take advantage of the Mountain View community access television studio.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and Mountain View-based KMVT 15 have partnered to created public service announcements that could help prevent crimes. Recently, Deputy District Attorney Janet Berry and Gilroy Police Department Sgt. Chad Gallacinao taped a segment about landscaping scams taking place in the south county city. "We are thrilled with this situation," said Sean Webby, media coordinator for the DA's office. "We don't have the skills or experience to do even an amateur job." According to Webby, some landscapers have targeted elderly people in Gilroy and do a mediocre—if not bad job—and then leave with the victim's money, without rendering good service. These public service announcements, he explained, would …

Cell phone calls, texts and other distractions on the road earned nearly 6,000 Bay Area motorists citations from the California Highway Patrol last month, the CHP announced Friday. The 5,900 citations to drivers throughout the region came during the CHP's "It's Not Worth It" campaign to remind the public of the dangers distracted driving poses as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, according to CHP officials. "We were overwhelmed with the support here in the Bay Area," CHP Chief Teresa Becher said in a statement. "Our allied law enforcement agencies as well as many other public and private entities in the community stepped forward to make a difference. Some made a pledge, others posted the message on electronic signs or in…
