Cupertino Seeks Poet Laureate

Applications are being accepted through July 26.

 

A published poet with a flair for performance who lives or works in Cupertino is being sought to become the next Poet Laureate of Cupertino. 

The Poet Laureate will create and host public events that promote the literary arts in the Cupertino community and inspire creativity in local residents. Events might include poetry contests, writing workshops, lectures and public readings. The person chosen must be 21 or older, and able to serve a two-year term starting Oct. 1, 2013.

Candidates must have a passion for the literary arts, the ability to teach poetry on a variety of levels and a leadership background to work with local sponsors, city leaders and others to schedule and promote events. 

When applying for the two-year post, applicants must submit an original poem written in English. Applications are being accepted through July 26. A selection committee will interview final applicants Aug. 5-16.

Applications are available at the Cupertino Library Reference Desk, Cupertino City Hall and Quinlan Community Center. They also can be downloaded from the Cupertino Poet Laureate website.  

The person chosen will replace David Denny who will be finishing his term as the first Poet Laureate of Cupertino on Sept. 30.

Denny is a resident of Cupertino and a professor at De Anza College where he teaches Literature, Introduction to Poetry and other courses. Prior to joining De Anza, he was a 1985-86 graduate teaching fellow in playwriting and poetry writing at the University of Oregon.

Among Denny’s published works is a book of poems, Plebeian on the Front Porch, which is about living in Cupertino. It’s available from Finishing Line Press.
